It is not always easy to make the decision to come to therapy. Recognising that you need help is an important first step.
You may be struggling to cope with a moment in time or have deeper concerns about feeling stuck and limited by the repetition of familiar patterns and behaviours.
You may not even know what it is that is troubling you. You may feel that you are not getting the most out of life.
I work in a relational way. I believe that humans are shaped by the success and failure of our relationships and that a sense of self and wellbeing is created and determined within this context.
The therapeutic relationship is critically important. My work pays attention to this, using what happens between us to inform our understanding about how you interact with the world outside the therapy room. Therapy is a collaborative partnership that offers a steady, warm and containing presence, facilitating growth and helping to optimise your inner strengths.
Children and young people frequently experience emotional difficulties which impact their overall well-being and confidence. Your child may be experiencing a number of issues including withdrawal and social isolation. They may experience difficulties at school or with friends, leading to real unhappiness. These experiences often impact the family as a whole.
Therapy can help young people to navigate these challenges in a supportive and empathetic environment. Articulating deeply held feelings coupled with practical tools provides young people with a springboard for good mental health, helping them to feel happier, more in control and confident overall.
Involving parents/carers in this process is fundamental to its success. Learning how to best support a young person throughout their counselling journey is key to moving forward positively. An initial assessment with parents/carers will assess and better understand the help and support required.
Regular review sessions as the therapy progresses is recommended.
Once you’ve made contact, we will arrange a time to introduce ourselves and to understand why you are initially seeking support. I will explain how I work, giving you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have in relation to the therapy process, my experience and qualifications. It will also be an opportunity to think about what type of therapy you might like i.e, face to face, online, telephone or other. There are a number of possibilities.
This includes personal details and a comprehensive assessment of what will be the best way to help and support you to reach your required goals. It’s really important that you have had a good opportunity to begin to tell your story at this stage and to feel the opportunity to seeing a way forward.
We will discuss together and agree on a counselling contract, giving you a full understanding of how I provide my service and what you can expect.
I will email you a copy of this agreement for your approval and signature.
